Monster of the Day #3240

You know, we could probably do an entire T-Fest of “Astronauts Come Back from Space as a Monster” movies. Easily. Weird little micro-genre. Anyway, Incredible Melting Man, on Amazon Prime.

  • Not very good and entirely too down beat for its own good (but, you know, Seventies Film, it was obligatory). Gimme Quatermass Xperiment any day over this.

Watch it last weekend. Ah, look at the cute old couple. Kill them.

  • Let’s be honest, this is practically a serial number filed off, cheap-ass remake of *Quatermass* and certainly owes more to that than the oft cited *First Men in Space* that it is often said to resemble.

  • I will say the trailer for this f*cked me up for *years*. It was shown during the previews before either “Pete’s Dragon” or “The Wiz”. Either way I was probably no more than sic or so. I have *no* idea what the manager was thinking, but it was decades before I could even watch the big climactic scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” because melting people absolutely scared me sh*tless. Because that’s a realistic fear.

Is ‘Quatermass I’ the only good treatment of the ‘astronaut returns as a monster’ trope? It’s the only one that comes to mind.

Though doesn’t this one end with the monster as a puddle of goo a custodian sweeps up and deposits in the trash? That did get a chuckle from me.

Well, it’s the best. I mean, Nigel Kneale script is hard to compete with.

“First Man into Space” is pretty good, but no, it’s no Quatermass.
