Monster of the Day #3346

I liked some of the beasties from Love and Monsters (although I haven’t seen the film yet). Even so, for many of us suits will also beat pixels. So if you’re in that mood, here’s one from Knights of Badassdom, which I just discovered is actually available on Amazon Prime.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Looks like something out of Psycho Goreman.

  • Gamera977

Amazon keeps recommending this to me and I keep passing it up as a recent movie. Will give it a look- thanks!

  • Now there’s a happy fella!

I watched this tonight (still on Prime FYI). It is pretty damn fun, and I enjoyed it. There are a couple of shots of a CGI demon during its early appearances, but it is almost all suit and puppetry, and it’s pretty glorious in action. I wouldn’t say it’s as good as Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (an admittedly high bar), but if you enjoy that type of movie you should have a good time with this. You definitely should check it out if you also indulge in roleplaying games; there were a couple of nice bits for those of us that do, which is unsurprising but is that kind of touch that lets you know the makers at least did their research, if not being outright “one of us.”

My favorite and least favorite thing are kind of spoilery, so maybe don’t read this last part if you are interested in going in cold.

Least favorite: one particular character’s death about halfway through.

Favorite: the power of heavy metal is instrumental in defeating a demon from hell, and also gives us a nice send-off for the previously-mentioned character.

Thanks for the short review! It’s still on my queue but I keep passing over it to watch something else. Will try to give it a go tonight or this weekend.

I watched it last night. And it was fun. Just pure goofy fun. I did think some of the RPG stuff was sorta ‘off’ but I’ve never tried any of the LARPing type stuff. So maybe it’s correct from that point. And Summer Glau is really cute.

And the final ‘boss’ monster that Ken posted here is a nice callback to the She-Creature.

Aside from a very small bit of Vampire: the Masquerade I did years ago, what I know about LARPing mostly comes from stories I’ve read over the years. I will say the kind of day-long game played in the movie seems to be more of a thing in Europe, and I highly doubt anyone builds props as ambitious as the dragon (although I would gladly join one that had such a thing), but other than that it seemed pretty on-point. YMMV and all that, I’m certainly no expert.

    Agreed on Summer Glau, though.
