Monster of the Day #3276

Huh. Apparently in Germany sex and horror sold as far back as the 1920s. Who knew?

This film is great, by the way. You should definitely check it out.

Should pop up on TCM Silent Sunday this month.

  • It’s in the public domain last time I checked, so there are a couple of versions out there, with different edits and soundtracks. They are not all equally good.

Really need to watch this, I’ve heard so much good stuff about it.

Why don’t I watch classics instead of what I watched last night? A Thai horror/comedy called ‘Killer Karaoke’. About what else- a haunted karaoke machine…. And now I understand why you have J-Pop, K-Pop, but you never hear about T-Pop…

I finished up with pretty good episode of ‘Banacek’ so the night wasn’t entirely a wash…

  • Beckoning Chasm

    It’s actually a Swedish film…

  • “They’re Norwegians, Mac.”

Sorry. There are so few reasons to use that quote that any stretch will do.

  • I recently bought the Criterion release, which is as lovely as you’d imagine.

My sole problem with this movie is that it’s a beautifully done film that is pretty badly out of date when it comes to the research it uses. I know, the research wasn’t out of date when it was made, but there’s been a lot of work done on the European Witch Hunts since the 1920’s by historians.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, i would definitely get the Criterion edition. I haven’t checked out the Blu Ray. Remember, you can order these films in from your local library and not necessarily have to buy them, although Criterion has a few half off sales very year, and it would not be a bad investment.

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, Banacek! Did somebody ask if he was Polish?

  • Ken_Begg

I think the poster is German, though, although I may be wrong.

  • Ken_Begg

I wouldn’t use it as an academic source, but as a film it’s great.

  • Gamera977

Nope! But he does regale us with another Polish folk saying.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, not too accurate with more modern stuff I’ve read but the FX at the time must have made people’s jaws drop open.

  • I got the BluRay during one of Amazon’s periodic “buy two movies get one free” sales. Super good deal.

  • Eric Hinkle

The problem is that so many people seem to think it’s a 100% accurate documentary.

But it IS an amazing piece of film, very worth seeing.

  • Eric Hinkle

Heck, I thought it was amazing when I first saw it on TV years ago. It can still be surprising to see what they did with SFX back then.

  • Eric Hinkle

This will be a weird question, but do you know if anyone ever did a written history of the early silent horror films?

  • Beckoning Chasm

I thought there was one (with an ironic-type title, like “Soundless Screams”) but I can’t remember for sure.

  • Eric Hinkle

    Thanks.

  • Ken_Begg

I’m sure I’ve seen books like that over the years. I would be shocked if McFarland Press hadn’t published one.
