Monster of the Day #3241

Amazon Prime week continues. If Gamera isn’t your flavor, somehow, Amazon does offer a few non-Godzilla Toho films. Manda is a briefly seen sideshow in Atragon, rather like the giant walrus in Gorath (although Manda also got a brief appearance in Destroy All Monsters). Even so, it’s a fun addition in a neat movie about a flying submarine fighting an undersea civilization trying to take over the world.

How’d they find a guy who could wear that suit!

  • Gamera977

And there was a pretty neat CGI Manda in ‘Godzilla: Final Wars’.

That pic isn’t actually from ATRAGON. I believe it’s the version of Manda seen in FINAL WARS.

I actually haven’t seen Atragon (although I can now rectify that post-haste) so I may be mistaken, but this seems way too well-lit to be a shot from his Final Wars appearance. It also doesn’t have that slick CGI look to it.

  • There’s a monster coming, Manda submarine!

Could be a production photo. I hadn’t watched FINAL WARS in so long I’d forgotten that the film’s Manda was animated. Still, it’s clearly a later version than the one used in ATRAGON.

Speaking of, the film is a good example of how Toho hates it’s fans across the sea. Tokyo Shock was trying to get the AIP version onto DVD, but Toho pulled a George Lucas and mandated that only the inferior International dub be used for the DVD.

  • That seems to be the case with most of the Showa Godzilla’s these days. Man I miss the “original” English voices for Godzilla v. the Sea Monster.

    It was Calista Flockhart.

(That’s still a relevant reference for the kids, right?)

Toho never got over how American studios would cut up and manhandle their films. So they don’t like the dubs because they correspond to re-edited versions of their films. On the other hand, I have as much nostalgia for those as anyone–Hal Linden in Sea Monster!–and Rock Johnson is right, the Toho dubs are horrible.
