Monster of the Day #3098

Rather a change from yesterday, we have Bert I Gordon’s best movie, for what that’s worth. It’s definitely kiddie fare, but it’s a fun bit of sword and sorcery, and Gordon definitely isn’t afraid of the monsters. The best is this gorgeous giant dragon prop. It doesn’t move very well, but damn. It’s available for free viewing on the Cult Cinema Classics channel on YouTube, and a better copy on Amazon Prime.

I saw this on TV as a kid, and the “Ghost cave” sequence really scared me.

I was just at a test at the Tonopah Test Range and in the middle of a fly got on one of the long range cameras. I was going to make a Bert I Gordon joke, but figured no one would get it. Ken, I can send it to you if you want to feature it as a MOTD!

  • Rock Baker

If the monsters and the cast weren’t enough, it also features the delicious Anne Helm as the Princess. Hard to figure why her star never rose higher than it did, but you can say that about numerous actresses, sadly.

Me too. To a young boy this film was both exciting and truly nightmarish at times. The Ghost Cave, the weirdness in Lodac’s castle, those two knights who are so horribly burned they look like they were exposed to an atomic explosion, urrgh!

And the name of the movie is……..??

  • Gamera977

‘The Magic Sword’ – 1962 with Basil Rathbone and Gary Lockwood.

  • The Rev.

I still wish I owned this prop, and I don’t care how impractical it is.

Imagine putting that out on your yard for every Halloween.
