Monster of the Day #3047

I don’t know peplums enough to give them the love they deserve here. They just didn’t play on TV very much back in the day. Still, they are oft goofy delights, as explicated by various examples appearing on MST3K. It would be nice it get some remastered widescreen Blu Ray sets to show them to advantage.

In the meantime, several are available on YouTube. Sadly, the print for Medusa vs Sons of Hercules is quite soft. A bit sharper is the one for today’s subject, Fire Monsters Against the Son of Hercules. This beastie appears less then 10 minutes in, and he’s delightful. Anyway, give it a look.

I had the “50 Sci Fi Movies Classics” box, and the damned thing was littered with Sons of Hercules movies (because they embody sci-fi so well, I guess).

Only in a peplum movie do you not only get to see a sea serpent but you see Hercules or his kin punch it in the face!

Okay, so ‘peplum’ means sword-and-sandal movies? Guess you really do learn something new every day.

Silly and goofy as these films were I’d take any of them over ‘art’ films like Salo. *shudder*
