Monster of the Day #3018

Kiss of the Vampire is surely one of the lesser seen Hammer horror movies. I think I caught one rare TV broadcast of it back when I was a kid. However (for the moment anyway), there’s a surprisingly decent print of it available for viewing free on YouTube.

Happy (ugh) Monday, everyone. Be safe.

  • I don’t think I’ve even heard of this one.

For many years, an edited US version called Kiss of Evil played on TV. The full version with the original title never got shown.

I picked up Hammer Horror Series 8-Film Collection on DVD some years back and I’m happy to say that the uncut version of Kiss of the Vampire was included. Not to oversell it, but this was in my opinion the best non-Lee vampire film ever released by Hammer. (I know I’m gonna hear it from Kronos fans for saying that, but I stand my ground.)

Also fun to point out that this film served as partial inspiration for The Fearless Vampire Killers.

    Same here.

Is it like “Kiss of the Spider Woman” only without so much dank prison cell?

  • Eric Hinkle

That picture made me wonder if this movie has a younger, slimmer Orson Welles as a vampire hunter. That would’ve been a trippy movie.

  • I sure hope it is a less disappointing watch than FVK, which I’ve never managed to sit all the way through.

  • zombiewhacker

Well, it’s certainly a lot easier to sit through than FVK… don’t worry!
I just thought I’d mention the connection.

Again, I don’t want to make the mistake of building up expectations too high for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. For my part, I only saw it for the first time a few years back and was pleasantly surprised… a subdued but effective little “B” flick from Hammer Film in its prime.

I would go with Kronos (which I really like) over KotV, but man, really, better than Brides of Dracula? That’s a proud minority position you’re, uh, staking out there.

  • zombiewhacker

    Ugh! Ughhhhhhhhhh!

  • I’m moderately indifferent to Brides, so there you go. No accounting for taste. I do love Captain Kronos though.

  • zombiewhacker

Well, then, you’ll probably prefer Kronos over KOTV, too. Truth be told, I”ve never been a big fan of Kronos, so once again, different strokes for different blokes.

Seems like I’m the lonely outlier here.

  • KOTV is definitely on my weekend watchlist now, so there’s that. Frankly anything will be better than pretty much any serious (I adore What We Do in the Shadows) vampire movie of recent vintage.
