Monster of the Day #3003

With people spending a little more time at home (I’m still going into work, so other than stopping to sit down and grab a bite, this whole thing isn’t really doing that for me), let’s get back to Things You Can Watch on YouTube.

This is one of several films padded with footage Roger Corman obtained by buying the American rights to some opulent Soviet sci-fi films. Funny to think of communists selling the fruits of proletariat labor to the ultimate capitalist, but there you go. I think it was Andrew Carnegie who said, “The Communists will sell us the film stock with which we will hang them.” Something like that.

Anyway, this was filmdom’s sexiest space vampire until Matilda May made the scene.

  • Gamera977

I haven’t see it yet but somehow I doubt she had as many nude scenes as Ms. May…

And btw wouldn’t Vampirella count as a space vampiress?

  • Beckoning Chasm

Yeah, this is a fun one. And another Forrest J Ackerman cameo, too. (I watched “Transylvania Twist” the other night, and not only does Forrest have a cameo, he’s even holding an issue of Famous Monsters.)

  • Lifeforce is the better Space Vampire film.

Just wanted to throw that out there. Y’know, before someone started thinking I had taste.

  • bgbear_rnh

    Don’t look at me!

  • zombiewhacker

I know what this is, but where can I find it?

  • YouTube.

  • Lifeforce is one hell of a Quatermass film and if looked at through that lens is surprisingly pretty good. And certainly fun.

  • My sister just sent me Crab Monsters, Teenage Cavemen, and Candy Stripe Nurses – Roger Corman:King of the B-Movie

I love her and she knows me too well, but what better quarantine reading and movie watching inspiration?

  • Rock Baker

Marilyn Hanold played a space vampire (of sorts) about a decade previous in a Stooges short.

  • Eric Hinkle

Is that the one where the boys meet a giant slurpasaur on Venus and end up at the Liar’s Club?

  • Rock Baker

That was exactly my reaction to the film. It was basically a Quatermass episode -80’s style.

  • Rock Baker

Well, I could make a shameless plug here. My first short story collection just hit print….

  • Rock Baker

I think so. They did a couple of space spoofs during the Besser years.

  • My Dad and I always thought so.

  • Ken_Begg

    She had bigger hair, though.

  • Ken_Begg

    Yep.

  • Gamera977

I watched this last night. The repurposed Soviet footage was really nice. The prepping of the alien spacecraft for launch was dang near Toho quality FX.

And the actress that played the Blood Queen was really creepy and intimidating. And so powerful it took John Saxon to defeat her!

  • Eric Hinkle

Where is it available and what’s the title?

  • zombiewhacker

Actually it took Judi Meredith to defeat her.

  • zombiewhacker

Okay, I watched it. Don’t mean to bum out anyone around here but I didn’t care for it very much. Too slow and the protags were dumber than those characters in that Geico Halloween commercial.

One thing in its favor though: I appreciated that Saxon, Hopper, and especially Rathbone didn’t phone their performances in and really gave this movie their all.

  • Ken_Begg

No, but you always want to cross another flick off the list, though.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, if I recall, she really nailed her.

    (I still got it!!!!)

  • Gamera977

But, but women back then only made sandwiches and coffee for the men!

Seriously, yeah Meredith did defeat the Space Vampress. It’s that Saxon mostly played badass heroes and villains so I had to make a (admittedly poor) joke about it.

  • Gamera977

Check on Amazon under ‘Rock Baker Cartoon Cuties’ and it should come up.

  • Eric Hinkle

    Thanks!

  • The Rev.

I haven’t seen this OR Lifeforce. Maybe I should make that a double feature next weekend, if possible.

  • Gamera977

Not sure I’d ever describe ‘Lifeforce’ exactly as a ‘good’ movie to me at least it’s a ‘fun’ one.

And after all the griping about the ‘Picard’ series seeing Stewart getting whacked by a space vampress is pretty cool.

  • Eric Hinkle

What griping about the Picard series? I have heard it gets very snide with its political commentary but unfortunately that’s the norm for modern media SF.

  • Eric Hinkle

I can remember the time they met Hoss as ‘the Goon from Venus’. It had one of my fave bits from the Besser years, when he and Larry try stealing some unprotected jewels by shoving them in their mouths only to be told “We protect them by coating them with deadly poison.”

  • Gamera977

I haven’t seen it but some people seem to think it’s a little dark for a Trek series. Frankly for me ‘DS9’ is about as dark as I want a show to go.
