Monster of the Day #3000

Stuart Gordon has passed away. I’m getting up there, so I remember when filmmakers from the ’40s and ’50s started dying, now it’s people remembered from the ’80s. I never really felt that Re-Animator or From Beyond (admittedly, I haven’t seen that one) really ‘felt’ like Lovecraft, but man, Dagon sure does. Great movie. RIP, Mr. Gordon.

Keep safe, everyone.

“Dagon” is probably the best adaptation of “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” that we’ll ever get.

  • Gamera977

You can say that again! So it makes some changes here and there. Still it keeps the essential spirit of the story intact.

  • Gamera977

Yeah ‘Re-Animator’ is neat little movie but I’m not sure it captures the Lovecraft vibe all that well. And ‘From Beyond’ is okay- not really a great nor a bad movie IMHO.

  • It’s loads better than CTHULHU that had Tori Spelling in a seductress role.

  • Gamera977

    Yeah I prefer Macarena Gomez.

Honest to gosh if I were making up a silly fake Latino name that would be it…

He needed to make some changes though. Gillmen have been done to death since the story was published and coastal Massachusetts really isn’t that remote anymore.

What I mean is that he wanted to make the tale contemporary and to do so he needed to make some changes.

  • Eric Hinkle

I do think that Dagon gets needlessly gory in one or two spots but it is one of the better HPL adaptations ever done. Though I prefer the two films by the HPL Historical Society over Gordon (sorry, folks). And I’ve been hearing a lot of praise for the recent ‘Color out of Space’.

  • Dorothy P Cobb

Color out of Space is really good though of course the color isn’t a color you’ve never seen before.

    Two silly questions:

    1) How did we get from MoTD #2099 to MoTD #3000?

    2) Does the expression on the fishman’s face above make him look like he’s constipated to anyone else? Sorry but that’s just how he looks to me.
