Monster of the Day #2038

I can’t imagine anyone going to see Dr. Phibes and being disappointed, because it’s great. Still, that poster promises a film that tonally is very different than the actual movie.

  • Gamera977

I like it. It gets the message across without revealing Phibes true appearance like the ‘Love Hurts’ poster.

I was thinking this morning we were robbed by never getting ‘A Christmas Carol’ with Vincent Price as Scrooge.

So my dream version of ‘A Christmas Carol’:

    Ebeneezer Scrooge: Vincent Price
    Jacob Marley: Christoper Lee
Ghost of Christmas Past: Boris Karloff
Ghost of Christmas Present: Peter Cushing
Ghost of Christmas Future: John Carridine
    Mister Fezziwig: Bela Lugosi
    Bob Cratchit: Peter Lorre
    Mrs. Cratchit: Hazel Court
    Tiny Tim: Tor Johnson

I’m not sure about Frank Holywell. Any suggestions?

  • Ericb

John Hurt would have made a great Scrooge.

  • Gamera977

Yeap he works! Though I’m thinking now Carridine as Scrooge- I can see him rolling his eyes and shouting ‘HUMBUG!’

  • bgbear_rnh

George Zucco soliciting donations for the poor.

    Fred Holywell: John Agar?

  • Hazel Court as Janet Holywell. Barbara Steele as Mrs. Cratchit…..

    Tiny Tim: Angelo Rossitto

  • There is a fairly heavily abridged 1940s TV version of A Christmas Carol with Vincent Price as the Narrator floating about, though he isn’t Scrooge himself. It’s probably on YouTube because it frequently turns up on those low-rent collection of public domain and otherwise uncared about by the creators films.

  • Gamera977

Really!?! I’ll have to look for that!

    Thanks!

  • No problem, my bottomless knowledge of obscure Christmas Carol adaptations has gotta be good for something, right?

  • Gamera977

Searched YouTube for ‘A Christmas Carol Vincent Price’ and got a couple of hits. Will check them out this weekend. Thanks again!

  • Eric Hinkle

I think Patrick Stewart did something like that too, didn’t he?

  • Eric Hinkle

He’d work better than Tor Johnson!

  • Eric Hinkle

Would you mind awfully if I shared these ideas for the perfect Christmas Carol with a few friends of mine elsewhere? I won’t claim the credit/blame.

  • Gamera977

Doesn’t bother me. It was a slow day here at work and I was just being silly.

  • The Rev.

I love this movie unreservedly, but I have to say, having that woman in the movie would not have hurt it in the slightest.

  • The Patrick Stewart one you mention does. I think the George C. Scott does as well, but it’s been years since I’ve managed to sit through that one. There are others but those are the ones that come to mind first. The old PBS stage production from Ford’s Theater that used to run every Beggar’s Week in the 80s probably did as well.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, they’re in the Scott version with Edward Woodward as Christmas Present.

  • Gamera977

Watched it Sunday. Not the best version of ‘ACC’ by a long shot but the narration was wonderful. I’d be happy to listen to Vincent Price read the phone book.
