Monster of the Day #1894

“Quick, Astro-Henry, the Space-Flit!”

I don’t really see the Robot or Dr. Smith or even Will on any of these covers. I wonder if they couldn’t afford to license them.

Hmm, the ants don’t even have mandibles, aka the scary part! On the giant ants in ‘Them’ they were one of the more distinctive features.

And are those the ‘LoS’ uniforms? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the show but they look odd. Without them plus no Dr. Smith or the robot they just look like generic space comic covers.

Luckily the Jupiter 2 library has a copy of “Joan Collins’ Garden Tips” Chapter 4: Giant Ant Infestation

  • zombiewhacker

Plus the hero on the cover is blond. (????)

Was this originally rejected artwork for a Star Trek cover?

  • You’re not going to see Dr. Smith or the Robot, because neither of them were around when these things came out. In fact, from what I read CBS might have stolen the title and concept from the comic (Both CBS and Allen had dealings with Key and might have known about some of their other lines.)

BTW, again neither here nor there but I saw Alita: Battle Angel the other night and absolutely loved it. Enough that I’m going to try to catch the 3D version this weekend.

I understand it’s a manga and a anime series? Can anyone here familiar with it point me toward a way to check them out without having to buy a bunch of stuff before I know if I like those versions or not?

  • Check YouTube. My brother watched the OVA there not long ago (not sure there was a complete series made…)

  • The Rev.

Other than that OVA (which has two episodes) there are no anime for the series. It’s pretty much the manga and that’s it. I’m not familiar with it so I can’t say if it’s any good.

  • kgb_san_diego

I will double the recommendation. I also rather loved Alita. Plotwise, it is a bit of a hot mess, and there is just a bit too MUCH as respects the love interest. But the visuals and world building were astonishing.

  • Eric Hinkle

It’s like a scene from Land of Giants, isn’t it?

  • Gamera977

Thanks guys! I’m going to do some research tonight. Sorry, didn’t have a chance before but thought I’d post the question over lunch at work.

I’ll start with YouTube and then move on from there.

  • Gamera977

The plot was fine by me other than leaving one big thread hanging for a sequel (which I really hope this movie gets). I went in cold with no knowledge about it and was able to follow the story without any confusion. And I normally don’t like romantic subplots but this one didn’t bother me- loved when Alita gives Hugo her heart ;).

Only thing that kinda bothered me was that some of the bad guy cyborgs were a little too crazy and over the top. They did seem a little cartoony, but I guess it sorta fits the original material.

All in all – it’s fun! I was feeling a bit depressed and stir crazy and had to get out the house so I went to see it just on good word of mouth. I left the theater with a big grin on my face. That’s the best recommendation I can give it.

  • Flangepart

I remember this series. I wonder if the title is closer to the movie ‘Swiss Family Robinson.’ The wording kind of suggests that.

Anyone here ever see that old kiddy TV show ‘The Banana Splits’? It’s coming back to TV.

    On the SyFy Channel.

    As a slasher movie.

Yes, I am serious. There’s more at the ME-TV site and on one called ‘Deadline’.

    From ME-TV —

    Here’s the official synopsis:

“A boy named Harley and his family attend a taping of The Banana Splits
TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley
and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But
things take an unexpected turn — and the body count quickly rises.”

Who would have ever expected “Banana Splits” and “body count” to be used in the same pitch?

I have got to watch this glorious train wreck unfold when they show it. It’ll be like the ghost of Ed Wood is right there in the room with me. And does this mean that fanfics have gone mainstream?

  • Ken_Begg

Check your local library for the manga. They can probably borrow it if they don’t own it. With the movie I’m sure some more libraries have been buying it.

  • Ken_Begg

It’s Snork, right? The killer has to be Snork.

  • Gamera977

Big thanks guys! I found about a half dozen copies of the OVA on YouTube including at least one subtitled one. I’ll give it a go when I get some time to sit down and watch it. Thanks Cullen and Rev!
Ken, thanks! Probably a lot of other people have the same idea so I’ll wait a month or so and then I’ll see if the local library can do.

  • Gamera977

Is nothing sacred these days!!! :)

  • Eric Hinkle

I am now looking forward to ‘My Bloody Little Pony’

  • zombiewhacker

Thanks for the info. I had no idea Lost in Space originated as a comic book… a Gold Key comic no less.

  • Gamera977

Check out ComicArtistPro Secrets My Girthy Stallion on YouTube. Sure he’s doing it as a joke but you did ask. :)

  • BGBear_rnh learntocode

    Uh oh, Chongo!

  • Eric Hinkle

    Now I’m afraid to look!

  • Gamera977

He draws the Pony as this black hell horse with a fiery mane and an evil skull on his rump…

  • The Rev.

Ethan van Sciver is a hoot.

  • Gamera977

I watched the OVA last night and was pleasantly surprised at how faithful a translation the live-action film was even down to recreating scenes from the animated version. Biggest difference was the live-action film was at two hours almost twice as long so the characters and their motivations were fleshed out a great deal more. Looking forward to checking out the manga and original story. I’ve read that the live-action is actually a better translation than the OVA.

    Thanks again!

  • Rodford Smith

The only thing Gold Key licensed from Irwin Allen was the “Lost in Space” phrase, and that was well after the comic had begun.
