Monster of the Day #1868

Here’s to a great 2019 (2020 almost here!) for everyone.

I have to admit, I don’t love the two Jim Hensen fantasy films. They certainly have their fans, though.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I think they both have great designs and a lot of imagination, but Dark Crystal illustrates the problem of giving your audience more information than your characters. When I first saw it, and the lead goofus (or whatever) kept wondering “What do I do with this shard?” I kept answering, “You’re supposed to heal the crystal!” before I realized that he wouldn’t know that.

Since then I think it’s a mistake to give the audience too much information right out of the gate.

I think that’s what happens to the turkeys the US President pardons every Thanksgiving…

‘GET OFF MY LAWN YOU YOUNG PUNK!!!’

That’s one movie I haven’t seen in forever, I really need to see it again.

Yup, I am one of the defenders of this movie, and am unreasonably excited about the upcoming sequel.

  • I found them both dull as dishwater while also being disturbing. What I did not find either to be was entertaining, but as in all things YMMV. I’ve never felt any deep need to revisit them in adulthood.

  • Flangepart

    One’s a mutant buzzard, one’s a rat monster: They’re cops!

    Muppet Scabies?

  • This is one of my all time favorite movies. I watch it every so often and really get as much of a kick out of it as I did as a kid.

  • The Rev.

I loved this movie as a kid. After many years I was finally able to see it again, and found I still really enjoyed it. The creatures are pretty fantastic. I also do a pretty mean Skeksis Chamberlain.
