Friday the fourth features some late night William Castle movies, but more interesting to me because of its obscurity is the 5:00 AM showing (Saturday morning, really) of Mysterious Doctor, a 1943 movies about Nazi spies using a headless ghost to scare people away from a tin mine. You know Scoobie Doo gets involved in there at some point.
Saturday the 5th Pretty much 24 hours of Bette Davis movies scheduled, if that is your bag. It should be noted that the recently deceased Richard Widmark is getting a lot of play this month too.
Sunday the 6th Afternoon showings of Bogart’s The Big Sleep and Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt, maybe his best thriller.
Wednesday the 9th sees a string of peril on trains movies, starting at 8:00 PM. The Narrow Margin (1952), Terror on a Train, Berlin Express, The Cassandra Crossing, North by Northwest and Spy Train. Sorry, no Terror Train.
Friday the 11th sees late night showings of Attack of the Crab Monsters and The Thing From Another World, followed by the TCM documentary Watch the Skies.
Anyone who thinks I hate anti-establishment flicks on reflex should check out The President’s Analyst on Sunday the 13th at 6:00 PM. It’s a terrifically funny paranoid political satire starring James Coburn.
Fire up the TIVO on Tuesday the 15th for a string of fun rock ‘n’ roll pictures, most of them tremendous camp fun: The Fastest Guitar Alive (Roy Orbison [!!!] in a Western, as a guy with a gun in his guitar…really), Don’t Knock the Rock, Don’t Knock the Twist, Juke Box Rhythm, Go Johnny Go, Cha-Cha-Cha Boom, Bop Girl, and the very funny It’s Trad, Dad, a pre Hard’s Day Night movie by director Richard Lester. Plus, how can you go wrong with How to Get Yourself a College Girl, starring Chad Everett (!) and Mary Ann Mobley (!!!!).
Monday the 21st sees an afternoon showing for the obscure Rowan and Martin comedy The Maltese Bippy.
Wednesday the 23rd sees more danger on a train movies: Murder on the Orient Express, The Lady Vanishes, Terror by Night (Sherlock Holmes) and Murder in the Private Car. Actually, there are train themed movies running all month, if that’s your bag.
Monday the 28th sees a whole slate of daytime Juvenile Delinquency flicks: Riot in Juvenile Prison, Teen-Age Crime Wave, Violent Playground, The Young Don’t Cry, The Delinquents, Blackboard Jungle, The Careless Years, Because They’re Young and So Young So Bad. Boy, you know there’s some prize camp there.
Meanwhile, while I love TCM mostly for the obscurities, let’s not forget that in any given month (like this one) they will show films like Psycho, The African Queen, All About Eve, The Big Sleep, Shadow of a Doubt, Night of the Hunter, King Kong, 42nd Street, Anatomy of a Murder, North by Northwest, The Thing from Another World, Singin’ in the Rain, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Philadelphia Story, Citizen Kane, The Adventure of Robin Hood, The General, Red River, The Third Man, Harvey, The Asphalt Jungle, Paths of Glory, A Man for All Seasons, Zulu and a lot more besides.
