Another part of our cultural heritage is gone with the passing of Ben Chapman on Thursday, Feb 21st. Born in 1928, Mr. Chapman grew to an impressive six foot five, which made him perfect for the role of the Gill Man in Universal’s The Creature of the Black Lagoon. Although stunt man Ricco Browning did the amazing underwater scenes in the suit (which in order to be kept sleek did not have any internal air source), Mr. Chapman played the Gill Man out of the water, and his pantomine skills are a significant reason why the Creature remains one of the most beloved movie monsters ever.
Mr. Chapman remained actively involved with the fan circuit, appearing at a myriad of monster movie conventions and the like. By all reports, he was a great guy, always happy to sign autographs and chat with fans. He was also an erudite fellow, speaking not only English, but French, Tahitian, and Chinese.
There aren’t many left from his era, and thus his passing is even more keenly felt.
As a trivia note, Mr. Chapman was the cousin of actor Jon Hall, who played an awful Gill Man knock-off himself in The Beach Girls and the Monster.
