Monster of the Day #1800

Sir Antony Hopkins on the right. Or…the left. I don’t know.

  • Beckoning Chasm

    I remember liking this one.

    “Silence of the Hams” ?

The week better end with the scariest of all, “Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy”.

Hopkins looks so young. But Fats was just a Hugo Fitch clone.

I never understood how Bergen made a career as a ventriloquist. You could see his lips moving. Of course, he got his start on radio ;-)

  • KeithB

Because he was funny. And he had a talented daughter.

  • Flangepart

“Like my vent figure? I bought him second hand from Gerry Anderson.”

Until Hannibal Lector came along, this was probably the role Anthony Hopkins was most remembered for… at least, for my generation.

  • Eric Hinkle

What about Jeff Dunham and Achmed?

  • maggie smith

I never thought he was funny and nobody knew about his daughter until she grew up.

  • Beckoning Chasm

That, and being the doctor in The Elephant Man.

  • zombiewhacker

    Oops, forgot about that one!

  • Rodford Smith

During one radio show the audio technician found the sound level kept varying. When he couldn’t find a cause in the booth, he looked out at the studio. The boom mike operator was dutifully aiming the mike back and forth between ventriloquist and dummy.

Whatever his technical faults, Bergen was talented enough to be convincing. :-)

People who work with the Muppets quickly acquire the habit of speaking directly to them and ignoring the muppeteers. Same sort of thing, I suppose.

  • Wade Harrell

I never saw this movie but the commercials scared the crap out of me when I was a kid!
