Monster of the Day #1727

AvED does the Killer Baby trope. Usually it’s not the tot saying, “I could just eat you up!”

Not sure if you need Dr. Spock or Mr. Spock for this one…

Off topic: When is the next T-Fest/Tween-Fest scheduled?

  • The Rev.

This Saturday, actually! Maybe Ken can finally post last year’s write-up before he leaves for Texas!

    Wait a minute–that’s just a prop!

Thanks much Rev — apparently, I asked just in time! :-)

  • The Rev.

Yes. Yes you did. And you’re welcome.

This will be OT but —

Thanks to a long-ago recommendation on this site, I got my hands on copy of Fraser’s HOLLYWOOD HISTORY OF THE WORLD. Rather an entertaining and informative read, especially when he talks about films covering things he personally experienced. Such as WW2 and the late British Empire/end of the Raj.

He also pours venom and scorn on our American tendency to glamorize gangsters and robbers. (He doesn’t think much of Dirty Harry or Death Wish either — ‘vile and ghastly movies about vile and ghastly people’.) Seriously, he goes on for quite some length about it, wondering why Hollywood loves thugs and murderers so much and want people to see them as sympathetic. You have to read it to get the full impact.

Anyway, Mister Begg, thanks for the recommendation.

  • Fun book, by the way! I agree with his assessment that we history buffs never give Hollywood enough credit for getting it right when they do (more often than not, even given the practical limitations of filmmaking), and capturing the “feel” of an era. One can read the books, look at the artifacts, visit the reconstructions, and even handle replicas – but to know what it was really like to live in a Norse village in the 10th century, go watch “The Vikings” starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis…..

All that I have read by Fraser is excellent. If you haven’t, I *highly* recommend “Quartered Safe out here” and “The Complete MacAuslan”.

I’ll look for them. I’ve read the Flashman books, “Black Ajax”, the Hollywood book, and “The Steel Bonnets”. Oh, and his comic novel about the “Reivers”.

I’ve got to see ‘The Vikings’ some day.
