Monster of the Day #1654

The box for this movie seemed omnipresent in video stores back in the day. I might even have rented it once, but I can’t quite remember if I’ve watched it or not. I do remember seeing images of this scarified cop a LOT though.

Seems to have some decent reviews. And under two hours! I dig that running time…

  • The Rev.

Okay, I actually saw this way back in high school. I’m sure I was sold on the trailer, which featured the demonic ice cream man and what happened to him after chortling about scooping out the hero’s brains. I remember liking it all right, but haven’t seen it again. I’ve heard enough people talk about how much they like it since then that I should probably revisit it.

Ah, Hellcop! It’s a rather bizarre little flick. I’d call it ‘okay’. Not quite bad enough to mock, but not all that great either. Still it’s better than most of the SyFy Channel’s offerings.

BTW: Totally off subject but Rock has a cool list of his favorite 136 movies with a few more runners up on his blog: Baker’s Log.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Was that the title? I thought it was Highway to Hell.

  • Ericb

Thanks for the rec. That was a fun read!

  • The Rev.

Might be an alternate title; Hell Cop is the name of this character, so it’s possible.

Off-topic: I hope Ken reads this: PLEASE CHECK YOUR E-MAIL AND RESPOND ASAP. Thank you.

  • Eric Hinkle

D’oh! I confused the name of the character with the movie title.

By the way, can anyone confirm a rumor I just heard that Criterion purchased the rights to all the ‘First Gen’ Godzilla movies and will be releasing them in their typical high-quality DVDs and Blu-Ray sets?

  • Chris Metzinger

Hey, Ken, just wanna say, today is the first time I’ve checked your site in quite some months (although I’ve been enjoying it since 2005). I looked up the random (and rather unattractive) pic from this post and watched the movie. It was campy and silly af with small moments of near brilliance and it made my day. And I really needed that this week. Thank you for putting all of this content out there for all this time. Seriously, thank you!

  • Chris Metzinger

Oh, and that mysterious soundtrack that tickles…

  • Ken_Begg

You’re welcome, Chris! Yeah, these movies are great, aren’t they? And finding the occasionally minor and even major gem makes slogging through the dreck worthwhile.

    Except for SyFy movies. Blech.

  • The Rev.

Yeah, rate of return of Siffy movies is too low to really be worth it. Without cable, I’ve watched a lot less dreck since I don’t have access to Siffy, where it was all too easy to just flip over on the weekend and see what new nonsense they were broadcasting, always hoping for a Megapiranha or a Splinter but usually getting a Behemoth or an Ice Road Terror or a Goblin or one of those two giant squid movies, etc.

  • Chris Metzinger

Ya, I can do without all that SyFyllus! (Totally original joke! I’m the first! Gotta be!) … j/k
