Monster of the Day #1631

I have to admit, I never got into Damien Hellstrom. I think he’s kind of dull, I don’t like the character/costume design, Marvel’s demons are generally quite lame, it’s version of Hell is tepid, ‘soulfire’ is far lamer than GR’s ‘hellfire,’ etc. Still, that’s a pretty good cover.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I always wondered what happened to Trog after Joan Crawford dumped him.

  • Ericb

Jeez, at least give the guy dark hair and a gotee. As it is he looks like Hell’s Aquaman.

  • bgbear_rnh

    More like Son of Satin.

  • Gamera977

And the pitchfork that looks like a trident doesn’t help.

  • bgbear_rnh

I think the devil’s tool was originally supposed to be a trident, poking at souls like they were fish, but it almost comically evolved to pitchfork.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I’m going to guess that’s Gil Kane’s artwork.

  • There is something about Daimon Hellstrom that kills all my efforts to poke fun at him. It’s probably the way he dresses. And maybe the damn haircut. Anyone decked out like that is enough of a joke in and of himself that a regular joe such as myself can’t hope to dent it.

About the best I can say about Hellstrom’s look is that at least he doesn’t have Green Arrow’s goatee. Mein Gott. what a crap nightmare he’d be then…

  • Eric Hinkle

Has anyone here ever read the stories Marvel did about Daimon’s sister, Satana the Succubus? Seriously, I am not making that name up.

  • bgbear_rnh

No relation to Carlos Satana ;-)

  • Gamera977

    I was thinking Tura Satana……;)

  • Acethepug

Yup. liked her more, esp. the black-and-white magazine appearances (I think those got reprinted in the “Vampire Tales” mini-trades). Her comics stuff wasn’t too bad, until she was brought back “modern” a few years back.

  • Eric Hinkle

Did Marvel actually do a good job with any of their horror characters that they brought back? I recall that they basically ruined Dracula.

  • Acethepug

I didn’t really care for them much, the best “new” monster thing they did was Franken-Castle, when the Punisher was killed and stitched back together a-la Frankenstein’s Monster for awhile.

  • Eric Hinkle

I heard about that one, and that most “real” Punisher fans hated it. Or so Tv Tropes would have you believe.

  • Flangepart

Now she could played that one on screen, oh yeah.

  • sandra

I think I saw one once: A girl is walking down a dark street and is accosted by a wannabee mugger/rapist. She sucks his soul ( I guess) and stands over his corpse and says something like ” Don’t mess with Satana – the Devil’s daughter.” Question : who was their mother ? Rosemary ?

  • Eric Hinkle

The mother was never named. She thought her husband was just being eccentric. Until one night she caught him and lil’ Satana doing a black mass. He revealed that he was Satan and she went crazy. ‘Satan’ took Satana off to Hell while permitting Daimon to be raised by nuns or the like.

  • sandra

Aren’t Black Masses worshipping Satan ? So he was worshipping himself ? Wow, talk about an overinflated ego !

  • This is Satan we’re talking about it. Saying he has an over-inflated ego is most likely redundant.

  • Eric Hinkle

Indeed. Who would expect Old Scratch to be full of himself?

In case you want to watch, starting at 8 tonight on TCM they’ll be
showing the Lugosi ‘Dracula’, followed by ‘Dracula’s Daughter’, ‘Son of
Dracula’, and climaxing with the immortal 1922 ‘Nosferatu: A Symphony of
    Horror’.

I hope TCM runs movies as good as this for the rest of the month!
