Monster of the Day #1459

I was really pleased to see how well this show held up. It certainly isn’t as sophisticated as some of today’s stuff, but was patently a labor of love for many of those who worked on it.

  • The Rev.

No joke. Surprisingly grim for what’s supposed to be a kid’s show, too.

This one of the very few cartoons from my youth that hold up pretty well. It’s pretty much this, “Johnny Quest,” “The Herculoids,” and to a lesser degree “Transformers,” which is about the only toy tie-in that does to any extent. If we include things from my teen years we can add “Gargoyles” and, naturally, “Batman: TAS.”

  • Rock Baker

Even as a kid, I thought this would make for a good movie (and I was never wild about the show, to be honest. I’d probably get more out of it now, actually).

  • Flangepart

No…nope, no clue. Wass iss Das?

Something that came after my Saturday morning viewing days. “Thundarr the Barbarian”?

  • It doesn’t hurt that Jack Kirby was involved with a lot of the design work. And yes, I’m back from vacation, did y’all miss me?

  • I’m always leery about going back and rewatching favorite cartoons of my youth, especially cartoons associated with Hanna Barbera. This might be the exception. Which would be just as well, as though I remember watching this, I couldn’t tell you much about it.

  • Eric Hinkle

Yeah, this is Thundarr. I loved that show. I even think I had a crush on the sorceress character (Ariel?) before I was really much aware of girls.

  • Eric Hinkle

Thundarr! How I loved that weird show.

  • Acethepug

Definitely agree, especially this, “Batman: TAS” and “Gargoyles” (at least, the first two seasons).

  • Acethepug

PRINCESS Ariel — causing no end of consternation when Google Images bring up Disney’s Ariel instead :)

  • Ken_Begg

Hey, I have no idea why Ariel was so much hotter than, say, Tara, but she was. Maybe because she actually did stuff.

  • Ken_Begg

    And you are….?

    See you next week!!! SKWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Acethepug

    A-MEN!

  • The fact that this was Ruby-Spears instead of Hanna Barbara might have helped.

  • Eric Hinkle

    Who’s Tara?

  • Eric Hinkle

Search with the terms ‘Ariel, Thundarr’. That seems to work.

  • Acethepug

    Thanks!

The mother of the family on “The Herculoids”

  • The Rev.

Tara was the mom/wife on “The Herculoids.” She was usually there to get captured and little else. Even the guys had those slingshots; I don’t remember if she had anything. I mean, naturally the Herculoids did all the heavy lifting, but I’m sure those slingshots sealed off at least one vital cave entrance at some point.

Ariel, by contrast, had deus ex magicae and was just as likely to save the day as Thundarr was. I don’t know that she was captured that much more than the other two, either, although I could be off on that. And, as previously established, she was pretty hot, as far as that goes with a cartoon character.

  • Eric Hinkle

Wait, the “Herculoids” mom actually had a name? I must have totally forgotten it. Then again, it’s not like the human characters on that show amounted to much.

  • It might. It might indeed.

Would have sworn it was Hanna Barbera. All that work spelling the name right… for nothing.

  • You certainly did better than I on that account.
