Monster of the Day #1442

Yep, it’s Ye Olde Haunted Object time. Hey, it’s economical, right. You know what else was economical back in 1990? Nudity! It seems at least a few of the film’s three (!) sequels also featured The Cheapest Special Effect.

‘Mirror, mirror on the um…stand what’s the worst movie in all the land?’

    Though a mirror snarkly.

You save on costuming for sure.

  • Oh, this movie isn’t so bad. It’s at least completely and totally forgettable. Unlike some flicks I could mention.

I have to wonder why Hollywood seemingly can’t make a good “haunted object” movie when someone like M.R. James did it twice in his ghost stories.

Oh well, at least back in ’90, nudity was still usually pleasing to the eye. I honestly feel quite sorry for young men growing up right now and being exposed to dirty magazines and movies and seeing aesthetically unpleasing nudes. They have no idea what they’re missing, and have no way of knowing that they’re getting the short end of the stick.

Way off topic, but would anyone be interested in taping some stuff off TV for me this
month? (And then subsequently burning them to disk so I can watch them?)
TCM on the 15th is showing MASTER MINDS, SPOOK BUSTERS, SPOOK CHASERS,
and THE BOWERY BOYS MEET THE MONSTERS. On the 29th is BLOOD AND BLACK
LACE, and the 31st has DEAD OF NIGHT. I haven’t seen any of those.

  • There’s a key difference between the average Hollywood scriptwriter and M. R. James. In fact, it’s the key difference between most ghost story writers and M. R. James: They ain’t M. R. James. Guy’s a beast. A scholarly beast.

True. I try reading modern “horror” every now and then, and usually end up shaking my head in disgust. Between the political rants, the rape scenes, and the sadism — well, it’s horrible, all right, but not the way ‘horror’ ought to be.

This seems to mirror yesterday’s post ;-)

Let us all pause and reflect.

Dead of Night featured a good haunted mirror segment back in the day, but that wasn’t a Hollywood movie, of course. On the other hand, there *was* an American TV movie with Louis Jourdan many years ago that handled the haunted mirror premise pretty decently. Again, we’re talking last century, mind you, but still…
