Monster of the Day #1427

All right, back to work you bums.

I of course gave no thought to this this weekend, so let’s stick with these for a day or two.

  • Eric Hinkle

Snickers can tame even the King of the Monsters.

Talking monsters, has anyone seen ads for the remake of The Magnificent Seven? I cringed when the movie ad looked like a checklist: “Okay, here’s the black guy, and the woman, and the American Indian, and the East Asian, and the guy with the gatling gun…”

Oddly enough it’s the last part that bugs me the most. Wasn’t the whole point of the original story that the villagers were horribly outgunned even with help from the Seven? It’ hard to see them as weaker when they have that much firepower.

I’m hoping my worries are utterly misplaced and that the film is a ***** wonder.

  • Go back to the original original: The Seven Samurai. “A village hires some samurai to defend it against bandits. It starts raining. Kurosawa keeps filming….”

  • bgbear_rnh

IIRC, in the seven Samurai, the villagers had a lot of amour and weapons, but were not skilled in using it. The equipment came from soldiers and samurai that had been wounded/killed in various fights around the village.

  • Eric Hinkle

I do remember that, though as I recall it didn’t make things that much easier for them, and the samurai still did most of the heavy fighting.

Another odd thing I noticed about the remake: apparently they changed it from Mexican bandits raiding a Mexican village to Anglos bandits and villagers. I wonder if that’s being done just to ‘be different’ or not?

  • Ericb

I love that the Indian looks like a Mohawk who time traveled from the 18th century.

  • Rock Baker

Off topic, but is the old site working? That’s the link saved in the favorites and for the past few days I’ve been unable to bring it up.

  • Flangepart

Also, just who has the cannon and Gatling? They seem to be using it to try and kill Chris…if Chris is the Mag7 leader’s name in this version.

  • Flangepart

Ya wanna bet it’s an SJW Whining prevention move? Though the cliche’s abound, and SJWs…they can whine about anything.

Stubborn villagers just not cooperating with the re-distribution of wealth.

  • Ken_Begg

Don’t worry, I’m sure the outlaw gang will now be gigantic to outset the totally awesome firepower and there will be a TON of explosions.

I still think the horse-mounted twin Gatling guns I saw in the preview for Johan Hex might be the very dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, it might have finally given up the ghost.

  • Eric Hinkle

I just saw the Gatling, and the way the commercial showed it, it /looked/ like the Seven were using it.

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ll miss it if it’s gone. It was a fun site and the reviews were a joy to read.

  • Eric Hinkle

Of course he looks like a Mohawk from the Northeast — after all, this is the Great Plains! The ones that dress like Lakota and Dakota Sioux are probably all in Maine with their teepees.

  • An end of an era.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, any chance of bringing some of the reviews over to the new site that aren’t already here?

  • Gamera977

At least they didn’t make the entire gang female and then attack anyone that said the movie looked crappy as hating women.

  • Gamera977

Is it possible now days to make any friggin’ Westen without a gatling gun??? I’m sure the American Indians would have been polite enough to line up in rows so you could shoot them down with one…

  • Eric Hinkle

They did say that Denzel Washington is going to playing Yul Brynner’s old role. He’s still a fine actor, right? I remember him being praised around here a few times.

  • bgbear_rnh

He seems to be as good as the people directing him and writing his lines. In other words, he is not one of those rare actors that can look good in any role or make a bad film look better.

  • Eric Hinkle

    Ah. Thanks for explaining that.

  • bgbear_rnh

Don’t get me wrong, under the right conditions he is very good as in “Flight”.
