Monster of the Day #1311

The body language in these things is a bit bewildering. He caught her mid-stretch, maybe?

  • Gamera977

‘Hey watch your footing lady, you don’t want to trip and fall face first into the lava like your man there do ya? Here, lemme give ya a hand.’

  • Beckoning Chasm

Here hands look like she’s supposed to be holding the space rifle, but the art director said, “Hey, move that gun out of the way! It’s blocking the view!”

And I’m thinking Henry Slesar’s entry accidentally got sent to the cover department, instead of the personals.

  • bgbear_rnh

Yes, considering Captain Kirk is lying face down in the lava, she should be a little bit more set to shoot first and ask questions later.

  • Flangepart

Dangerous situation, and she has the gun slung and out of her hands…(pifft) Amateur…

  • Beckoning Chasm

That’s one very peculiar-looking rocketship, by the way.

  • bgbear_rnh

The rocket is pointy and sharp and so is the surface of the planet. I wouldn’t want to be a Cyclops around there.

  • I’ve figured out this week’s secret MotD theme! See, in all of these covers, the viewer is supposed to thinking that the monsters are the bad guys in the scene. But in a clever reversal of expectations, it’s actually the supposed damsel in distress that’s the real threat.

For instance, in this scene the blonde has shot her companion (probably to collect on his insurance) and she’s all relaxed with gun and “Ohohoho! No one will suspect me because I’m a beautiful woman,” but then blam! Alien Joe Friday has caught her and is going to hall her off to Space Court for a Space Trial where a Space Judge will give a Space Sentencing and send her off to Space Prison.

Or maybe sentence her to death.

    In Space.

The whole ripping of the shirt? Well AJF simple forgot to trim his nails that morning. Common mistake for his squad, but a costly one. It makes the trial a little difficult, bring up the ugly specter of police brutality and all. Things turn out alright, though, when they discover the “accidental shooting” consists of five point blank shots dead center in the chest from the highest setting on her Death Ray Rifle. The “I’m glad you’re dead you dastard” carved into his forehead is also a small clue things aren’t what they seem.

Of course, I might be reading into all of this. Just a little.

  • Rock Baker

Looks like she’s bending to the claw’s pull. The rips in the fabric seem to bear that out, as well as the way her top half is both turned and pulled backward. Speaking as a cartoonist, there’s actually some really good motion captured in this image.

  • Joliet Jake Blues

Love that belt buckle. Forget the flying cars we were supposed to have, why did we not end up with futuristic belt buckles?

  • Eric Hinkle

A bit OT but it was 60 years ago today that FORBIDDEN PLANET was released. Was anyone else ever as awed as I was and still am by the sets and matte paintings they used to create the Krell machines in that movie?

And I wonder, how long before Hollywood remakes the film? With, you know, plenty of CGI and someone like Chris Rock to voice Robbie the Robot?

  • Flangepart

    GAHHH! Don’t give ’em ideas!

  • Rock Baker

If I remember correctly, they were floating a remake in the 90’s to star Arnold Scharzenegger (sp?) in the lead. Would’ve been a pretty different take, certainly.

  • Eric Hinkle

Wouldn’t Schwarzenegger have done better as Robbie?

  • Gamera977

Or the monster from the id???

  • Rock Baker

Actually, I can kinda picture it in my head. Commander Adams was a career military man, a man of action, and had the part been re-done in the 90’s I can see where Arnold would’ve made a good choice. If they decide to resurrect the project, I can see Dwayne Johnson in the part today. Of course, if it were remade today, I can also see the color palette being largely limited to shades of blue.
