Monster of the Day #1267

Man, that’s lovely. How could anyone resist buying such a thing? Wally Wood, I’m thinking.

Yeah, it really looks like Wood, especially the green guy. Only the “OsW” in the lower right makes me doubt it–Wood used to sign his Mad work with his name in Old English.

Um, considering the size of the BEM’s cranium I think I’ve have went with a head shot there. Still it is a marvelous cover, as a youngster it would definitely have caught my eye.

“As a Captain of Science, I must respect a brain like that! I’ll just shoot him, um, in the shoulder. Yeah! He can still science all he wants to with an injured shoulder!”

Look, Mars needs women and you Earthling have billions of them. We are just talking fairness here.

  • I made a horrible, horrible mistake. I actually read one of these comics.
Not this one; the issue with the Skeleton, The Hangman’s Son. The stories in it caused actual tears in my head. For instance, at one point the US government drops an H-Bomb over a still populated city in a vain attempt to stop alien invaders. The Science only gets better from there.

The worst of them by far–the one that convinced me to stop for my poor mind’s sake–was the one about the vampire planet. I’m not going to go into it here (all of Captain Science can be found over at Comic Book Plus) but the ending makes no damn sense at all. I can’t imagine kids back then making heads or tails of it, either.

Well, no. If I’m to be honest, considering some of the things I watched as a kid, I can see a kid just accepting the brain scarring ending. But man. The old comics I’ve been reading of late have been Captain Americas and Batman (Batmen?) Silly stuff, sometimes, but… wowsers.

Nice art, though. Especially with The Hangman’s Son, which is a poor copy EC story. The ghosts, with their heads bent unnaturally to one side, are quite memorable, if the story itself doesn’t quite manage.

Now I think the AW in the corner stands for Al Williamson.

“For instance, at one point the US government drops an H-Bomb over a

Sounds like a SyFy Original movie.

    “Goodby Huston!”
