Monster of the Day #1202

Cinemax…OF THE FUTURE!

  • Beckoning Chasm

“My science project makes old people into young people. This makes them easier to chew and more flavorful.”

  • Gamera977

Hmm, Ross Rocklynne is the only author there familiar to me.

  • bgbear_rnh

Problem is that it was an old man who went into the device.

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ve heard of Zagat but I don’t remember ever reading anything by him. He seems to have written stories in almost every pulp genre but never made the big time.

  • Eric Hinkle

Alien: “Is that a problem? We have seven different genders ourselves.”

Humans: “How did the alien from a Philip Jose Farmer piece end up in Golden Age SF?”

  • Gamera977

The comments by you and Cullen the other day on Fredric Brown make me wonder how many classic stories might be moldering away in old pulps just because the authors didn’t become big writers (sigh)…

BTW: I think now I’ve heard of Zagat too, you know how odd names stick out more than say Joe Smith. Makes me think of Zagnut candy though.

  • bgbear_rnh

Zagat would make a good name for a candy bar.

  • bgbear_rnh

we were on the same wavelength there my reptilian friend

  • Flangepart

“What, you never heard of aging your human? Have you no culinary awareness, young Zacknar?”

  • bgbear_rnh

also drop the “g” in Zagat and you get “Zaat” and that can’t be good.

  • Rock Baker

Is the monster pleasantly surprised, or horrified because he’s turned the wrong knob?

  • Beckoning Chasm

I’ve heard of Ross Rocklynne and Cleve Cartmill. The latter wrote a great sci-fi/horror story the title of which escapes me.

  • Beckoning Chasm

“You elders and your traditions! You wait, you’ll see–my McZacknar restaurants will make me a billionaire!”

  • Joliet Jake Blues

I’m still not convinced that Nictzin Dyalhis was anything other than a pen name, for all Karl Edward Wagner claimed to the contrary in the Echoes of Valor series.
On the cover itself – its a Virgil Finlay, so of course its beautiful.

  • Marsden

I think I’ve heard of Zagat, too. Wasn’t he in Street Fighter II?

  • Eric Hinkle

Seems like an odd name to make up, though. And he was a heck of a writer.

  • I thought Zagat starred in Full House.

  • Two more writers for me to look up!

  • Luke Blanchard

Jack Kirby did a cover with the same theme for OMAC #5 (1975). Perhaps this was his inspiration.
    Finlay was a terrific artist.

  • Rodford Smith

Well, she doesn’t seem *too* unhappy over the accident…

  • Joliet Jake Blues

he did do a good femme fatale or two – was it Sea Witch or Sapphire Siren?

  • Eric Hinkle

I believe it was both of them. I definitely remember the Norse witch Heldra from ‘The Sea-Witch’. They have a decent write-up of him over at Wikipedia.

  • Eric Hinkle

And if you have Amazon Kindle, there’s a pack of six of his stories over there for only a dollar. Including the ones you mentioned. Not a bad price.
