Monster of the Day #1164

Now we know what Betty Boop would have looked like as a dinosaur lady.

  • CaptNemo

And we lost Elvis that same year. 1977 certainly sucked.

And who knew that you could disable a dinosaur by punch them in the tongue? Learn something new everyday don’t we?

  • Flangepart

“AHHH! Ooh It I Oung! I ate ooh!”
Superheros and dinos…a match made in comic book heaven.

  • Gamera977

Wait, dinosaurs invaded Earth in 1977?!?! I was in kindergarten and LOVED dinosaurs, how did I miss this!?! Was I too busy watching ‘Land of the Lost’???

  • Gamera977

And on a much sadder note I just saw that Christopher Lee passed away at 93. Gee friggin’ whiz, we’re losing all my favorite actors- RIP Mr. Lee…

  • Beckoning Chasm

The last of the greats. He will be missed.

  • Well that sucked a lot of fun out of this post. The movies and heavy metal will never be the same

  • bgbear_rnh

It has to be said with the sincerest respect and love of the actor. Should we put a stake through his heart to be sure? RIP Mr. Lee.

  • bgbear_rnh

It is really annoying when people put clothes on their pet dinosaurs to make them look “cute”.

  • The Rev.

I was too young to know about this. I’m surprised it wasn’t taught in my history classes, though.

And rest in peace, Mr. Lee. What a life he had. I’ll be watching a few of your movies this weekend.

  • The Rev.

“This” being the Dinosaur Invasion of 1977,” naturally.

  • Gamera977

I was watching ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’ a few months ago, IMHO the worst Bond movie- I think Lee as the villain is one of the few things that make it watchable. Roger Moore used to work with Lee in the theater and the two men knew each other fairly well. Well, Moore as a big practical joker and cut-up kept poking fun of Lee as ‘Dracula’. Seems it came to a head when they’re walking into the cave that serves as the enterence to Lee’s hideout on the South Pacific island and a huge flock of bats flew out. Moore quipped that Lee slowly turned back toward him, looked him in the eye and gave him the ‘I don’t even want to hear it’ look…

Has one of the best Bond car stunts though.

My last Lee film was “1941” this last weekend. Mifune & Lee together again ;)

  • bgbear_rnh

If you recall they didn’t want to panic the dumber kids so they kept hush, hush.

  • sandra

You really have to watch out for the ones in dresses.

  • Rock Baker

The story I heard was that Lee did all the spoofing of himself. He and Moore got along great as I understand it, but then Moore was a great friend to pretty much everyone he ever worked with.

  • Rock Baker

Hmmm. Are the Dinosaucers far behind?

  • Gamera977

Sorry, didn’t mean to give the impression Lee was ticked off, Moore said they were good friends. Lee may have been in on it, I don’t remember exactly what Moore said. Also the whole story was told in a self-deprecatory way by Moore.

  • bgbear_rnh

or Dinosaucier? I hear the do appreciate eating French cooking (or is eating the French?).

  • CaptNemo

They don’t make actors with voices like Lee’s anymore. We’re stuck with the pretty boys now.

I heard Lee worked in intelligence before becoming a actor. Worked with Ian Fleming even. Kind of surreal to see him in a Bond flick.

A memorable and great actor. Adios.

Captain Comet was a DC superhero of the 50s, who appeared in STRANGE ADVENTURES in 1951-54. He was a mutant with mental powers whose costume was a spacesuit. He can be seen on many of the covers. DC revived in 1976 as the hero of SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPER-VILLAINS.

The purple guys are Tommy Tomorrow and Brent Wood from “Tommy Tomorrow”. Its history is more complex. It started as a series of stories about future space exploration in REAL FACT COMICS, and was converted into a space patrolmen feature. In this form it ran in the back of ACTION COMICS for most of the 50s. It was moved to WORLD’S FINEST COMICS in 1959 (to make way for “Supergirl”) and lasted there until 1962. A revamped version appeared in five issues of SHOWCASE in 1962-63.

They were dated heroes by the 1970s – their use here was likely in a nostalgic or retro spirit – but I read a few of their stories in reprints as a kid and have affection for them. To my shame I didn’t recognise Tommy and Brent until I looked the issue up at the GCD, but in my defence they’re not wearing their trademark Bermuda shorts. The GCD’s page on the issue has a synopsis. (Chronos was one of DC’s stock supervillains, a thief whose costume and weapons were time-themed.)

  • The Rev.

I was born in 1977, so apparently they thought I was one of the dumb kids since it never came up.
Actually, they were probably afraid I’d team up with the dino-guy and his friends.
Which is not an invalid concern.

  • Eric Hinkle

I remember this! My very first DC Comic and all because I loved dinosaurs as a kid.

For years afterwards I thought that Tommy Tomorrow and Captain Comet were all big names at DC because they’d been in this.

  • Eric Hinkle

For soe reason I keep forgetting how that movie has Christopher Lee and Toshiro Mifune together in it.

  • Eric Hinkle

He was in SOE (Special Operations Executive) during WW2, and was dropped behind the lines in the weeks leading into D-Day to coordinate with French resistance to prepare the way for the invasion. He apparently did some wet work in the process — when he was doing Saruman’s dying gasp in RotK, Pete Jackson told him he wasn’t doing it right.

Lee supposedly looked him in the eye and said, “I KNOW what kind of sound a man makes when you cut his throat, sir! I was responsible for it!”

  • Rodford Smith

As a friend of my put it “This week is fired.”
