Monster of the Day #1007

Sorry about yesterday, a complete brain fart. Anyway….

  • Beckoning Chasm

“A Popular Publication”…with a cover like that, damned right it was popular. This has to be metaphoric, because it sure doesn’t make sense any other way. “Let’s bring the wheelchair guy up to the roof! I’m sure he’d enjoy seeing this.”

  • Spider-man never knew how lucky he had it.

  • Flangepart

The Octopus, master of crime…and where is The Spirit, hummmm?…

  • Beckoning Chasm

You can read the first couple of chapters at Amazon, with their “Look Inside!” feature. I’m starting to think this cover was actually pretty accurate.

Doctors packing heat, that’s the America I know and love.

  • bgbear_rnh

I was going to say it is not unusual for a hospital to have a patio for the patients to get some fresh air but, it looks like night so yes, I agree it looks wrong.

Also, Dr. Killdare there is wearing a surgical cap. Did he just rush out of the O.R.?

For a second I thought the pistol-packing doctor was wearing a lace collar. Then I realized that part of a tentacle, most of which is blurred by the spotlight, is wrapped around his neck. Blasting away with a handgun at a target across the street isn’t all that good a plan. Too bad the doc didn’t think to bring his rocket launcher to work.

  • Gamera977

Or hiring a couple of those you know… security guards…

  • Gamera977

I love how Octo-giant has his own eye headlights.

  • rtpoeman

    Calling the SyFy Channel…..

  • bgbear_rnh

He really should turn off his high beams as a courtesy to oncoming traffic.

  • Flangepart

Yeah. A period parody might work. If T.L.S. of Cadavra can pull it off…

  • Rock Baker

It turns out there’s a little Japanese in all of us…..

  • bgbear_rnh

I just thought Hell would be a little more flames and less cephalopod.

  • Mulciber

I really love how the doctor has a gun. Like, he’s actually going to take potshots at an octopus larger than a building with a pistol.

  • Eric Hinkle

I remember this one. It was considered one of the weirdest of weird pulps by many historians of the magazines. Not least the the doctor with his three personas — the normal doctor at a major hospital; Dr. Skull, who hides behind a mask and helps the poor; and the Skull Killer, who makes like the Spider and blows away criminals and other fiends with two blazing .45s. And then there was the Octopus him/itself, whose weird appearance is never explained and who turns other people into blood-sucking octopi-men and woman.

Yeah, the content page shows stories that seem way over the top. It’s only $3 for the Kindle, and I’m considering it…
