Monster of the Day #820

Unsurprisingly for the first two episodes they didn’t get too crazy (although it wouldn’t take long). Here’s a Kong-like chap, who is at least more sympathetic then Gomess. He ends the episode drugged and, we are told, to be taken to live in safety. Notice the tail in the last shot, because he’s supposed to be an embiggened monkey rather than a large ape. The tail was pretty ratty and obviously just sewn onto the suit. They didn’t focus on it much.

This episode, from what I understand, was a bit more light-hearted than most of the series, and is one to feature a child prominently (as the friend of the giant monkey). Goro here is a rare monster that, as far as I know, hasn’t put in an appearance since their first. You’d think, if nothing else, someone would redo it just because it wouldn’t take much to improve on the ratty-ass Kong costume.

ALF! Bigger, uglier and with a tail, but hey…

did the use organ grinder music to calm him down?

Where’s Mario when you need him?

One of the great things about the show is that the tone, the very directorial style, etc., tend to change from episode to episode. The kids oriented ones are often extremely weird and nicely set off the regular episodes. Again, I was REALLY impressed with this show. I’ve been sitting on the last disc because I don’t want to run out of episodes.

Another re-used suit, I see, as this was obviously rebuilt from the first Kong suit. I’ve often been puzzled by the odd fact that Toho could build some really incredible creatures, but could NEVER build a decent ape suit. That would theoretically be a lot easier than a convincing dinosaur, you’d have to think!

You don’t like the Nairobi Trio look of the ape suit? ;)

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, he would look better with a derby.

    Do-Mi-lah, Trey-pari-sol. Do-me-solati-so-so…
If only we could have seen Ernie riff on a Kaiju flick…

Yeah, I recall that being the case from a long-ago episode guide in G-Fan. Some of them were kid-oriented, some sci-fi, some had giant monsters, and I want to say a couple came close to horror. I reeeeeeeeally need to pick that up.

Granted, I still have to finish “Iron King” and I really should start that “Red Baron” series I picked up for dirt cheap a while back…
