Monster of the Day #787

“How about that Brooke Shields? She’s wild, isn’t she?”

  • Flangepart

I’d hate to be headbutted by that butthead.

  • Eric Hinkle

This is a Japanese movie, right?

  • bgbear_rnh

    Road to Kyoto ;)

  • Ken_Begg

It is, it’s Onibaba, a genuinely erotic thriller. It’ s available via Criterion, so you can probably get a copy at your local library.

  • Flangepart

“Yeah, them Japs is really somthin’ eh guys? Now here’s Jerry Colona!”

  • Ken_Begg

    Ha, Jerry Colona!

  • Rock Baker

It’s an erotic thriller? I caught a subtitled print (as far as I know the only version ever seen in the States) on IFC some years back and I must not have been paying attention because that aspect went completely past me! Mostly I recall being intrigued by the cinematography, with it’s claustrophobic exteriors amid all that tall grass…. Otherwise, though, I didn’t retain much…..

  • Eric Hinkle

Thanks for the suggestion, but there’s only one local library that stores any of the Criterion DVDs; the rest stick to 30-40 year old TV shows (like the entire run of ‘Dark Shadows’; takes up a whole shelf) or the most current and ‘important’ Hollywood movies. Criterion’s a bit to pricy for them.

  • The Rev.

I think I caught it the same way you did!

Anyway, yeah, the whole reason for this character to put on the mask in the first place is due to a rather torrid affair the other two main characters are having.

I’d heard so much about how creepy the mask was, and was not disappointed as it’s fantastic. If someone was popping out of tall grass at me wearing it, I’d be screaming and running, too.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, its not an erotic thriller in the Skinimax sense; a ‘thriller’ there mainly to motivate boob shots and antiseptic sex scenes. But much of the various characters’ motivation is sexual.

  • Ken_Begg

    Do they offer interlibrary loans?

  • Ericb

I just can’t get out of my head that this looks a bit like Fred Thompson. I’d make a 2008 election joke but the sell by date for those has long passed.

  • Eric Hinkle

You can do ILL with DVDs? I thought they only did that with books.

  • Ken_Begg

No, here we’ll get you anything.

  • Eric Hinkle

Well, I asked and it turns out they will indeed do ILL for DVDs and movies. Live and learn. Thanks for letting me know I can do that.

  • Ken_Begg

Cool! Since I work in a library, I think this means I can now write off the site as a business expense.

  • Eric Hinkle

I bought a copy of the Criterion DVD of this film, mostly thanks to what you showed me here about it. Thanks again, Mister Begg!

  • Ken_Begg

All part of the service! I also checked your tire pressure.

  • Eric Hinkle

My mistake — I got Onibaba through ILL, and bought a copy of Kuroneko, which I think has been mentioned here before. Still, I would never have looked at them in the first place if not for what I’ve been reading on this blog.
