Post Coming to a Theater Near You...THE TRAILER!!!!

We seem to be living in strange times. People have been discussing it on other websites.

In the past couple of months, we've had Three, count'em, THREE build ups to just the HYPE of movies.

The first build up was to the first trailer (not teaser, mind you, but honest to god trailer) for "Fifty Shades of Grey." Which was bandied about as being aired on the tv show "Scandal." Which only had a few extreme close ups of the actors hands and clothing (this is going to suck).

The second build up was to the recent Star Wars teaser. If do a search, you'll see the geeks come out in force to give their reactions. These guys haven't been this jazzed since they saw "Star Wars" logo at the beginning of Episode One Phantom Menace. As we all know, it was downhill from there.

The third will be happening two days from this writing. They are holding a press conference to announce the TITLE of the latest James Bond flick. It will be live streamed on 007.com. Hopefully, they didn't wait till the last second to choose a title like they did on Quantum of Solace (Click Here to See What I mean). Maybe Daniel Craig will show some guts and throttle the next report who asks him a dumb question.

Is this were we are now? That the advertisements are getting more hype than the actual movie. Ten to one they'll they'll be streaming the next Star Wars teaser as a Pay-per-View event. Think this trend will continue? Or will Hollywood go for broke, and hype the teaser for the trailer for the sneak preview for the 2 minute trailer for the first part of a 3 part franchise with a two part final films?

Teaser trailers getting hype isn't too surprising to me. I mean, that's why they exist. I spent quite a bit of time watching and rewatching the teaser trailer for Pacific Rim, for instance. And I remember people buying tickets to Meet Joe Black (I think) just so they could see the Episode 1 teaser. I mean, just think about that. Spending $8-10 just to see a 60 second commercial.

Youtube (and the like) makes it really easy to see these teasers, and the internet is great at concentrating stupid (see: tumblr). I don't think we're moving to pay-per-view teasers (indeed, we've already done that in a way).

I will say, however, that press conferences just to release the name of a movie are fucking stupid, pardon my French. When Skyfall's name was released, I knew someone who live blogged it. It's a name, people.

Getting excited over a teaser trailer just means the ad guys and editors did their job well. Going bonkers over a name drop is just ridiculous.

I remember back in the day that the release of trailer for Burton's first Batman movie made a huge media splash.

I'm sure everyone has heard about the Ghostbusters remake scheduled to begin filming soon. I'm also sure you've heard about the myriad of changes they'll be making to the story. Most notably, the gang being only females.

Sure glad I don't care. What ever they show you may, or may not have a lot to do with the end product. Kinda like ordering at a fast food joint.
