And by the way... classic lines like "Damn Chris. I told you we shouldn't have come here" are priceless! Horrible... LOL... but priceless.

I admit... not the best script. I guess Kristin Scott Thomas "hurt real bad" for some cash flow, but it will always be "Classic Prince" to me!

LOVE THIS FILM!!!

Hi Ken,

I've seen this movie 71 times. Honestly. (Insert joke here... "I'm sorry to hear that"... blah blah blah... whatever.)

I used to be a huge Prince fan, and still am on many levels. But I love this movie.

I understand the critics. You really have to be a Prince fan to enjoy this movie, and understand him and his "odd" way. But this movie has become a classic to Prince fans.

It's just humor. A fun movie to watch. Granted, the clothing worn by Prince is a bit much, but he was a gigolo, and his attire remained in tune with who he is/was as a performer.

I understand that Prince was "seriously acting" during the death scene... but what do you expect? Would you rather his head just explode? (Don't answer that!) I didn't think it was such a terrible scene... other than the "effete" or whatever, way that he was lying there on the ground when Mary came over.

I respect your comments, and have always enjoyed laughing at critical takes on this film. However, when I first saw it in 1986, I thought it was amazing! True, I was 15, but to me, it has stood the test of time as a simply fun and "fantastical" Prince movie.

Now Grafitti Bridge, THAT movie sucked balls! Unwatchable on any level.

But Under the Cherry Moon is blast of a good time!

From the rediculousness of the seen with Mrs. Wellington and the piano at the beginning, to the preposterous bath tub scene with Tricky (Umm.. NO, my friends don't throw rose petals into my tub, let alone enter the room when I'm bathing for long chats on the daily agenda.)

But that's Prince!

Mary's Party was riot! The "eye contact" was hilarious! The conga line was fun. The next day at Christopher's job when Mary came was a fun scene, the Chris visit to Mrs. Wellington's house was funny when "our Hero" left wine glasses, the Wrecka Stow part was a hoot, the scene where Prince and Tricky visit "Chez Sharon" and use the latter was a riot too, and while much of it was INDEED a cross beteen a perfume commercial and a Fred Astaire film, I found the film thoroughly entertaining.

Not to mention the "bats" scene, and Jerome's interation with the Isaac's henchmen.

I understand that I'm WAY outnumbered here, but this one of my favorite movies "Of All Times"!! lol

If I wasn't a Prince fan, I might think otherwise, but I'll probably watch this movie at least 5 more times this year alone!

To each his own. I respect your review and laughed right along with you at much of what you wrote, but I've always thought that critics were a bit too harsh on this film.

It's just a "fun romantic dark comedy" tale, as only Prince could tell it. And act it. And direct it.

And for heaven's sake... Bruno SUCKED BALLS! At least this film was tasteless and had aspirations of grandeur. I don't know WHAT the heck Bruno had aspirations of. Probably just of making me throw up in my mouth a little, ALOT!

Respectfully yours ;)
Thanks for the fun read, however, you will NOT rain on my "Parade" :)

Cheers!

Jesus, the pictures in this review are hysterical.

However, I hope you don't actually find Benny Hill funny, Ken.

Tricky? The character's name is Tricky?

Oh, I think I just heard Adrian Thaws (an infinitely cooler Tricky) preparing a lawsuit...

James, thanks for the comment, and glad you like the review.

"Seething with anger" might be a big strong. I'd say I was somewhat appalled when I first saw the film at what I saw as unwarrented pretension on the part of an amateur filmmaker. Nothing I viewed over the next two hours really disabused me of that reaction, either. And no, it's not a crime for a musician to make a movie--it's a crime for *anybody* to make *this* movie.

And if I do indeed manage to come off as pompous as Prince, well, that's a rare acheivement in itself.

I'm a Prince fan with a sense of humor. The review was hilarious, and UTCM is not a great movie by any means... but I take issue with your seething in anger over Prince using b&w for the movie. You get angry because a pro musician/amateur filmmaker takes his cues from one of his heroes (Scorsese) who also happens to be one of the greats? I suppose Prince should have tried to pay homage to Ed Wood instead, who also worked in b&w? I'm sure that would've been perfect for all the naysayers, but give him points for at least trying to make a good movie.

Plus, it's no crime for musicians to think they make movies, just as it's no crime for moviemakers to play music (Woody Allen, whom you do take down a peg here and there, comes to mind). If anything, what makes the movie passable for me (besides being a fan) is that he was clearly trying to make his own version of Charles Boyer's Casbah movies. Add to that the influence of MTV and turmoil on the movie set and you have a severely misguided-- but not completely unwatchable --movie experience that, upon retrospect, isn't that bad to begin with.

I'm not that rabidly passionate about the flick-- indeed, Prince can be a ridiculous character sometimes. But you accuse him of pompousness, and if it weren't for the pomposity evident in your own review I'd let it pass.
